Yi-Chia Lee

Current position

Department of Medical Research, National Taiwan University

Bios

Dr. Lee is a gastroenterologist in National Taiwan University Hospital, professor of internal medicine, and jointly appointed professor of the Graduate Institute of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine of NTU. He is currently the deputy director of the Department of Medical Research in NTUH.

The overriding theme throughout his research is stomach cancer screening and prevention, with emphasis on the evaluation of disease natural course, risk factor identification, and the design, implementation, and evaluation of the preventive programs.

Dr. Lee’s significant achievement is the design of the stomach cancer prevention program by answering the questions about whether it is preventable and if so, how to implement the program. Knowing that a one-size-fits-all approach is unlikely to be ideal, different novel approaches have been developed. These include the mass eradication method, the two-in-one method, and the index case method according to the differences in baseline risk, environment, socioeconomic status, health care resources, and the lifestyle for a specific population. Not only confirmed the long-term benefits but several theoretical risks of adverse consequences were elucidated. As a result, this healthcare policy has demonstrated a successful multi-location rollout in Taiwan, which is accompanied by a reduction in stomach cancer incidence.
